You’re not going to stop using AI — you’re making sure you still could if you had to. The engineers who maintain this discipline are the ones who can still debug at 2 AM when the AI suggestions are making the incident worse.
The Actual Opportunity Most Engineers Are Missing
There’s a meta-level opportunity here that gets lost in the productivity conversation.
AI is commoditizing the bottom half of engineering work faster than most people realize. The code generation part, the boilerplate part, the “translate this requirement into a CRUD endpoint” part — that’s getting cheaper and faster every six months.
What’s not getting cheaper: the judgment layer. The ability to decide what to build and why. The capacity to look at a system under stress and diagnose the root cause. The experience to know which technical bets will age well and which will become maintenance nightmares. The seniority to push back on a bad requirement before it gets built.
The engineers who will thrive in the next five years aren’t the ones who are fastest at prompting AI to write code. They’re the ones who use AI to amplify judgment, not replace it — and who are actively developing the judgment that can’t be outsourced.
That’s the actual leverage. Everything else is just keeping pace.
